Dear Peoples:

After two pages of The Jurassic Period, I've decided that it simply takes up too much time to color them. It looked good, but there was a reason it looked so good. I'm sorry if this dissapoints anyone, but I really want to get past the first part of Chapter 1, and I can worry about whether I want to color it or not when the comic is plenty underway.
Page 3 is almost done, page 4 is in the works.

An Ode to Waldemar Schuur

~*~MATTHEW SEEGER'S JOURNAL~*~

Dear Peoples:

The Modern Surrealist

Waldemar Pieter Schuur, or “W.P.S.” as he’s more commonly referred to, is a modern-day surreal artist in almost every sense of the word. He thinks so far out of the box, that some might say he’s in another time zone altogether. Hailing from the Netherlands, he’s not even 18 yet and pumping out almost professional-grade works.
By “Modern-day,” I mean he also dabbles in modern utilities as well. He certainly has talent wielding a brush and pen, there’s no mistake there, but he’s also a wizard in the digital scope as well. Working in Macromedia Flash almost constantly, he adds the same twisted flare to his cartoons as he does to his paintings. Another favorite of his is the program MS Paint, which he normally uses for quick, one-page cartoons.
Waldemar also likes to incorporate unconventional materials into his work. He scans objects like paper towel spines and coffee filters to draw over them in Paint. This shows the true measure of his talent- not many modern artists utilize the art of mixed media in this sense.
I don’t believe I can describe his style. Words that come to mind are “exaggerated” and “twisted,” as stated before. He loves warping his character’s facial expressions. No panel or frame in his cartoons have the same consistency as the last, which is what makes them so fun to watch. Spumko’s John Kricfalusi adopts the same principles with his cartoons. It’s refreshing to see such enthusiasm in someone’s animation.
The humors (rofl) in his works share the same surreal thought process that he uses in his art. Some would describe it as “random,” though Waldemar has stated many times how much he hates that word. His humor is unexpected, raw, and (dare I say it) completely bat-shit insane. He always voices his cartoons with the same tenacity, with a assortment of zany tones and voices at his command (he had told me once that he is nearly incapable of using a serious voice when he records).
There are a lot of common themes in Waldo’s cartoons. Waldo has what some might call a “fetish” for 80’s cartoons, and characters from those cartoons are constantly referenced. He goes through many interests quickly, such as the Spongebob Flash Cartoon Collaboration he and some of his friends did a while back. Still, his unmistakable style shines through. He also makes references to popular culture, and society today. Emos, American Republicans, and Anime are a few of these, and the butt of many of his jokes.
Anime is another thing both he and I share a burning hatred of. I used to be a sort-of fan, until I realized it was the same junk, the same style, the same storylines, and the same themes, all recycled from the last. Being a long-standing member of the website DeviantART (before his intentional banning, of course), this has become agonizingly apparent. People flock to anime like vultures to a carcass, and for what? The style is sickeningly... adorable. At least one of Waldo’s cartoons poked fun at how ridiculous anime truly looks. It’s a common theme in many of our discussions, where we’ll prattle on about how stupid its fanbase is.
There’s a message in his style and actions. The “norm” these days is to draw anime, gothic, or other uninspired styles. Too many people these days look up to Jhonen Vasquez as a role model and someone to mold their style after. He’s basically the goth-equivalent of the person who draws the “Cathy” strips- no talent, not funny, but the style he uses in his “work” appeals to the idiots of today, just as Cathy appeals to the overweight, middle-aged, antique-collecting women of yesteryear. Waldemar’s style is dark and twisted, yes. But he’s not trying to appeal to anyone, he’s just drawing, animating, and trying to get people to see that the exploitation of style for profit is wrong. It’s a ill-gotten paycheck.
His work is refreshing to artists like myself (coincidentally, I draw dinosaurs and comics for my fans and am a complete hypocrite for everything I’ve said here). He is the modern surrealist, like the Dalis and Magrittes of the past, he doesn’t conform to current trends, and lives in a world of his own.

SUCK IT DRY!

KBI
